Garden in November: what to plant, sow and do in November?
The month of November is a month characterized by greyness: it is the end of autumn with its humidity, but not yet the drier winter. You will harvest your last harvests and begin to protect plants that fear frost. This is especially the time to plant your trees and shrubs because, as a famous saying goes: “ On Saint Catherine’s Day, all wood takes root! ”.
The vegetable garden in November
Harvest the last of the root vegetables and pick the Brussels sprouts. Protect winter cabbages and all species sensitive to cold. Hill up the artichokes which you can also mulch to protect them from frost. Frost-prone vegetables will be put in a cellar or silo to preserve them. Force endives in the cellar.
Clean the plots that have reached the end of cultivation. Aerate the soil then spread compost, composted manure, straw or dead leaves so as not to leave the soil bare.
Drain water
pipes, especially those that are buried, and bring in garden hoses. Disinfect
all stakes before bringing them in.
Your compost bin having been emptied by the previously recommended spreading, you will be able to clean it and start adding new organic matter.
And if you have a greenhouse, now is the time to tidy it up a bit and clean the windows.
The orchard in November
Plant hardy fruit trees , currant bushes, raspberry bushes . Protect these young plantations, as well as the fig trees, from frost .
Collect the last fruits that have fallen to the ground, as well as the leaves: burn everything to prevent the proliferation of parasites.
Start pruning and pruning pome fruit trees only during periods of positive temperatures. Remove suckers at the base of trees.
The ornamental garden in November
For
perennials, cleaning the beds is necessary: remove all flowers and dry stems.
Concerning chrysanthemums, do the same at the end of the month only. Divide the
plants of certain perennials and replant immediately.
Unplant gladioli, dahlias and cannas, and let them dry in a dry place before storing them under cover.
Plant spring-flowering biennials and bulbs . Plant camellias and rose bushes. Prune summer or fall flowering shrubs.
At the beginning of the month, it's time to do the last mowing of the lawn. Then clean, sharpen and dry your mower blade and store it until next year. Regularly rake leaves that fall on your lawn.
If you have a pond, remove the dead leaves that fall there to prevent them from rotting or protect your pond with a tarpaulin.
